"Buy a rucksack and just start running!"
On the Camino de Santiago on foot in 109 days
2,726 km from Erdmannhausen to Santiago de Compostela and Cape Finisterre.
A richly illustrated travel diary with humorous encounters and eventful stories.
It would never have occurred to me to write a book about the Way of St. James. Shortly before Santiago, a pilgrim said to me: "Bernd, you're a storyteller and should write a book. Nonsense! When I got home, you could hear friends and acquaintances saying every other sentence: when are we going to hear about you? So I gave talks in churches and the library, which were very well attended. Until a pandemic called Corona brought my work to a standstill. Is now the time to write a book? Read it yourself!
Join me on the Way of St. James! We start in Winnenden at the castle church. The pilgrimage route leads through the Black Forest to Waldshut and along the Rhine to Basel. We continue via Bern to Lake Geneva. From Geneva, the route leads 1100 km across France via Le Puy to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. On the classic Camino Frances, we make a pilgrimage via Burgos and Leon to Santiago de Compostela and on to the end of the world - Cape Finisterre.
In wind and weather, the trail leads through impressive landscapes.
It is always the angels who inspire me and give me strength.
Warm encounters with pilgrims from all over the world require openness and trust.
The pilgrims' thoughts are dominated by two major themes: Eating and sleeping.
Ultimately, the pilgrimage leads to the realization of what a person needs for a fulfilled life.
The unique selling point of the book is the long distance and the time frame of almost four months. While at the beginning you are still preoccupied with the adversities of the weather, your rucksack and your health, over time you begin to see the beauty of nature and find inner contemplation. This process seems important to me in order to later encounter people from all over the world with openness on the main pilgrimage routes. From the very beginning, it was also important to me not to chastise myself with bread and water, but to reward myself with the culinary diversity of the regions after a long working life. The route was given to me, but I refused to plan my daily schedule until the very end. True to the motto: tell God about your plans and he'll laugh his head off!
