1 review for Miriam (Camino)

  1. Ina Schulz -

The novel about the protagonist Miriam is set in the eastern part of Cuba in Santiago de Cuba and is based on true events.

Miriam begins to realize early on how life works in Cuba and how to make it as comfortable as possible. She drops out of school early to live with a young man whose family abuses her as a maid for all the household chores. But Miriam later uses the skills she learns during this difficult time to captivate more and more men. Money and prestige are always her goals when she approaches a man. She has never brought luck to any of her lovers, so she quickly earns the nickname "the disastrous one".

The novel is an unembellished and very authentic reflection of the reality of some Cuban women. It provides insights into the social world and the way men treat their wives, which is often characterized by control and violence. The novel is written in clear, very authentic language and is at times disturbingly realistic. Bloody cockfights, vengeful violence, but also lavish parties and vivid love scenes - the story appeals to all the senses and transports the reader to the real Cuba away from picturesque streets and vintage cars.
