Wolf grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Prenzlauer Berg in East Berlin, attended elementary school and, from the 8th grade, a children's and youth sports school before becoming a member of a basketball club.
As he lived with his family near the border to West Berlin, he had constant opportunities to visit the western part and even as a young boy he always yearned to get out and explore and experience the wide world!
In his free time, he sat in front of his father's music chest and many movie soundtracks satisfied his longing for faraway places! At the age of 19, Wolf was conscripted into the "National People's Army" - with the assignment: 'Kommando Grenze'!
Wolf was thrilled! If an army, then to the border, because his thoughts about a possible escape were already rushing ahead. Would fate really be kind to him?

Reader -
I have read the story and find it very moving and very personal.
It provides a unique insight into a world that many people cannot even imagine.
It's wonderful to see what stories life writes and I'm delighted,
that this story has found its way onto paper - that only happens in a few cases.
Carina Krause -
I have already read several books on the subject of German/German experiences.
This book here gave me a wonderful journey through time, into a world that has been
is already behind the "door to yesterday". The GDR became past history!
People like Wolf Ahner risked their lives just to get to the West.
Unfortunately, exciting biographies like his disappear into the mists of the past.
Thank you for this insight into your life, Mr. Ahner.
